interview with MATT SHADETEK

Matt Shadetek is one of New York City’s most exciting producers. His live sets encompass contemporary dancehall, UK funky, and dubstep, all delivered with Shadetek’s unique production voice which bridges the underground-mainstream divide. He’s one of the rare DJs who can rock a crowd with sets composed solely of his own dancefloor bangers and remixes.

Vague Terrain 17: Collaborative Spaces

Announcing Vague Terrain 17: Collaborative Spaces

The newest issue of Vague Terrain is dedicated to exploring and showcasing a range of strategies for collaboration within the arts. Face to face recording sessions, collaborative editing, event organization, software design, intercontinental AV jam sessions and frequent flyer miles all influence the range of projects curated by Vague Terrain co-editors Corina MacDonald and Neil Wiernik. The issue brings together a range of multidisciplinary artists and presents not only creative output but also aims to highlight and contextualize their working relationships and processes.

Vague Terrain 17 includes work by:

Artivistic, Freida Abtan & Shane Turner (FAST), Hemiptera, I/O Media, Kate Carr, Robert Lippok & Debashis Sinha (Knuckleduster), Herman Kolgen & Kenneth Kirschner, Matt Shadetek, Max Tanguay, Minibloc, Morgan Packard & Josh Ott.

A Boom Bap Continuum - Beats from '99 to '09

For me the intention behind this is simple: to highlight the lineage of hip-hop production and beat making from the turn of the millennium to the present day, and perhaps shed some light on the fairly quiet revolution that has been taking place under the surface of mainstream media in recent years.

With some strange tags being applied to the current standard in beat making, I feel it it is important to shed some light on to this lineage. This is a journey from late 90s crate digging, to the circuit-bent soundscapes of the so called ‘post-dilla’ era.
I hope this music inspires you as much as it has inspired me these past 11 years.

King Midas Sound - Waiting for You (Hyperdub)

‘Waiting for You’ hit me like a wrecking ball this week through the headphones, a velveteen fist packed with longing, foreboding and sadness, delivered softly as a ghost.

Kevin Martin’s elemental soundscape organically complements the beautiful vocals of Roger Robinson (and guest Hitomi) to create an austere yet riveting atmosphere. Its emotional quotient isn’t easily dismissed; evocative, mesmerizing and intimate, it will get under your skin and leave its mark.

Try it and see for yourself....
